ABOUT THE 'SHOES FOR KIDS IN AFRICA' CAMPAIGN

Shoes for Kids in Africa was created by CommonThreadz, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to give orphans and vulnerable children in Africa a chance at a a better life through educational support, clothing, medical aid, family assistance & nutrition. The Shoes for Kids in Africa campaign is a great way to show your support by purchasing a pair of shoes (or more) for an orphan or vulnerable child. Your gift will make a lasting impression and change the life for a child in need.

The purpose of Shoes for Kids in Africa campaign is to provide as many shoes as we can to orphans and vulnerable children. Join us in our goal to provide 50,000 pairs of shoes by the end of 2010! 100% of your sponsorship gift goes to shoes for the children in need.

WHY SHOES FOR KIDS IN AFRICA?

	Shoes help prevent the spread of parasitic diseases that plague over 1 billion people worldwide, and they are a basic human necessity.
	The unfortunate truth is that many health conditions can occur even in the toughest of feet. As the skin toughens and thickens large cracks can form, allowing parasitic infections such as hookworm and threadworm can penetrate the skin. In addition, constant cuts and scrapes to the feet and ankles frequently become infected and many of these infections can lead to ulcers which take a long time to heal.
	The reality of life for many individuals in Africa and other developing nations is that having a pair of shoes is a rarity. It is not uncommon for children to grow up in these areas without ever having had a pair of shoes at all.
	The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that there are many hazards associated with going barefoot in contaminated sand, soil and dirty water, but the most obvious public health problem is hookworm disease. Untreated infections can lead to amputation and can even be fatal.
	Shoes are often a required part of the school uniform in developing countries. With out the shoes, many children are unable to attend school!
	The Number of Orphans in Africa that Need Shoes is Mind Boggling: Uganda and Kenya are home to 2.3 million orphans each, Tanzania to 2.4 million, Angola and Zambia 1.2 million each, the Comoros 33,000, Malawi 950,000, Namibia 140,000, Botwsana 150,000, Zimbabwe 1.4 million, Mozambique 1.5 million, Madagascar 900,000, Lesotho 150,000, and Swaziland and South Africa 2.5 million each.
	Samples of the shoes we buy locally in Africa for the kids. Bulk purchasing allows us to receive the best pricing at $10 per pair.

	There is also a competition for an all expense paid volunteer trip to South Africa to see the work CommonThreadz does first hand.
	The all expense trip to South Africa will be given to the team member that raises the most money. * $4K raised minimum.
	The current fundraising competition for a trip to Africa runs until midnight on June 28, 2010.

BUY A PAIR OF SHOES AS A GIFT!

Giving a pair of shoes to an orphan as a gift to a friend is a great alternative & unique present with purpose. Here's how it works:
	Click on the "Buy a Pair of Shoes Now" button above.
	During the check out process there is an optional field (as seen below) where you can enter the gift recipients name and email.
	We will email the gift recipient notifiying them of the gift made to the kids in Africa in their honor along with your name, photos and video of the child thanking them.
	If you wish to remain anonymous, please type "I wish to remain anonymous" in the same field that you enter the gift recipients name and email.
