Hi, Im Buyi. This boy is an orphan . He faild his final schoolyear in 2009. He was desperate to return in 2010 to school to try again to  pass.  However he did not have school shoes, with the help of CommonThreadz, he was provided with a pair of shoes which has enabled him to return to school.  We wish him well in his studies this year and are glad to be part of helping him complete his schooling.

Check mate!

February 4th, 2010 karen No comments

The Common Threadz chess programme has resumed after a break for the children’s summer holidays. What a pleasure to work with such enthusiatic and keen learners – we are having to turn children away weekly as we have our quota for the month. The idea is that once proficient, these children will in turn teach others to play the game. We have seen children who can barely sit still for a minute come and focus fully for an hour – it has been truly rewarding to be involved in this programme.

A little bit of English…

February 4th, 2010 karen No comments

There has been much excitement at the commencement of the English groups on Tuesday afternoons! Well done to Sue for making this initiative happen and many thanks to all the ladies who give up their Tuesday afternoons to help the children with their English by reading to them, playing games with them and doing schoolwork with them. The children are really responding well and becoming more bold by the week!

Common Threadz makes a difference

February 4th, 2010 karen No comments

Yesterday Common Threadz delivered relief food aid to a young mother and her three children in Ward 20, Obanjeni. Barely more than a child herself, her father passed away leaving her destitute and unwell. Her sole source of income is a child grant for two of her three children. This amounts to R248 (about $35) per month. She rents one bedroom for R100 (about $14) a month and pays school fees of R100 (about $14) a month – the balance she has left does not allow her to put food on the table, let alone clothe her children who range in age from 4 years to 1 year old. Thanks to Common Threadz, this little family will eat this month.

Proud of his new uniform...

With the generous help of Common Threadz, Mandla is now the proud owner of a new school uniform and can once more hold his head high when he goes to school. He is pictured here proudly wearing his new uniform and says a very grateful thank you to Common Threadz. Thank you for making a difference in this learner’s life!

About an orphan

Mandla

Let me tell you a little story about Mandla (not his real name). He is 15 years old and is in Grade 3 at school. His classmate’s average age is eight. He is a lovely boy: “very sweet natured, responsible and enthusiastic” according to his teacher. Unfortunately she says that she has not seen him for the past couple of months. Yesterday he arrived for a meal and one of the Common Threadz mentors, Sbu, shared his story:

Mandla lives with his very old grandfather. There is no breadwinner in the house so there is no money, not even for food. His grandmother lives far away and the last time they saw her she took Mandla’s school uniform away with her…he does not know why. This meant that Mandla could not show his face at school and is left with just the one pair of pants that he wears every day.

Mandla says he desperately wants to finish school – he started school late as he was sent to look after the cattle. I approached the school who said that he was welcome to come back, even if he does not have a uniform. He will be promoted to Grade 4 next year. He is embarrassed to go back and says the other children will tease him. However with much encouragement and Sbu emphasizing how important education is, he has gone back to his class today…watch this space!

Reading for a future…

November 30th, 2009 karen No comments

A quiet space

It’s cramped, it’s dirty and it feels like a sauna – that’s the space a little group of orphans found to occupy so that they could spend a while improving their English reading skills.

Every Tuesday afternoon during the school term a team of wonderful ladies give up their time to read through books with the children. Space is limited, cramped and often not conducive to concentration yet they work without complaining. The children love their time with these angels and although it is still early days, their reading is definitely improving.

We would like to build up a library of readers for the orphans as this is a project that is so vital to them. Thanks to Mamma Fikile for opening your home to the readers.

It’s not a game…

Concentration
Pretty (not her real name) is a 7 year old orphan and she has had exactly four chess lessons. She is showing astounding planning and problem solving skills and is beating children double her age and more. But stuck in rural Obanjeni with no family or money and limited access to any form of education, her future looks bleak…

Hi, I’m Karen and I want to let you know what a wonderful job Common Threadz is doing with the orphans in Obanjeni. Thanks to (among others) an orphan mentorship programme, a feeding programme, a chess club and an English reading programme, children like Pretty do have a brighter furture to look forward to. Pretty will grow up feeling that she is cared for, fed and clothed. Pretty will have role models to guide her and she will know that she is special.

We are not just playing a game here…help Common Threadz to make the difference in these children’s lives as they work hand in hand with Mamma Fikile and friends.
